Spinks win Kings Award accolade

Established in 2009, we are one of the UK’s most innovative spring markers and world leaders in responsible manufacturing.

The continued efforts to develop the latest in comfort technology and sustainability has been recognised over the years with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in 2013 and 2018, Sustainable Development in 2013 and 2019 and International Trade in 2018. This year, the business was awarded a further two King’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation and International Trade, bringing the total number won to seven.

Innovation is deeply woven within Spinks’ DNA thanks to our dedicated research and engineering teams who have achieved exceptional leaps since our last Innovation accolade, resulting in patented products and highly efficient processes. This year’s King’s Award for Innovation is no exception, where we were recognised for the design and manufacturing of revolutionary glue-less, fine-wire pocket springs.

Manufacturing components in-house has many benefits, one of which is that it allows Spinks to really understand the science behind the technology. In an industry that is relatively slow to seek new solutions in terms of products and processes, Spinks has continually invested to ensure it is revolutionising engineering through innovation.

Comfort is one of the core priorities when creating a mattress or piece of furniture and increasing the concentration of the springs is a key element in achieving high comfort levels for the end user. However, spring density is limited by the gauge of wire used. Our goal was to significantly reduce wire diameter without affecting comfort to create an ultra-fine-wire pocket spring with significant flexibility and strength. Working in collaboration with British Steel, a unique grade of steel was developed, alongside with an inhouse drawing process which has created a unique ultra-fine wire.

Our in-house design team built a first-of-its-kind coiler machine making the spring coiling process highly efficient with very little wastage – this led to improved outputs by 30%, a 60% efficiency gain and overall Co2 reduction of 30%.

Simon Spinks, Group Chairman of Harrison Spinks, said: “To be granted two King’s Awards is a huge honour and are a reflection of the hard work the team has delivered, ensuring we are constantly championing innovation and high-quality, sustainable design.”

New Global Sales Director appointment

We have appointed Chris Balmer as its new Global Sales Director, which is a newly created role designed to support the company’s growth and global ventures.

In the new role, Chris will be responsible for engaging the sales team to understand new geographic markets, identifying products and services that will grow the business, as well as nurturing and developing customer relationships with Spinks’ global and regional customer base.

Since beginning his career in 1994, Chris has worked extensively in the automotive industry with experience of manufacturing components and direct materials, which will transfer into the innovative spring manufacturing business.

Commenting on his new appointment, Chris said: “Team building is a core part of my personal and professional development and I have experience building structures that drive strategy, which is why I’m really looking forward to working with the team at Spinks.

“I can’t wait to engage with my team to build the foundations for driving significant growth together, as well as networking inside the industry and helping develop solutions for our customers, while still having fun along the way. My aim is to ensure that my team remain humble, hungry and smart in everything we do, striving to meet our customers’ needs both internally and externally.”

Darren Marcangelo, Managing Director of Spinks, commented: “We’re very happy to have Chris on board to help steer the company into profitable growth, not only with existing products but also identifying new ones to fill the future market needs and wants. He has already laid out plans to set goals for the sales team that are not just challenging but deliverable and realistic.”

Chris most recently worked as Sales Director for STS Manufacturing, a company that deals with Automotive and Industrial engineered products. Before that he was the Global Business Leader for Owens Corning’s Automotive division.

New Partnership & Non-Exec Director Appointment

We’ve set out plans to secure our position as industry leader in luxury sustainable comfort with the announcement of a partnership with a sustainability consultancy and the appointment of a non-executive director.

Earlier this month it was announced that the Harrison Spinks group has become the UK’s largest hemp grower following the acquisition of 80 acres of farmland in North Yorkshire, allowing the company to produce in excess of 1,000 tonnes of hemp annually.

The 180-year-old family-run business has a track record which includes three Queen’s Awards in sustainability and innovation, an industry first Carbon Neutral Plus accreditation and was the first in the sector to partner with British Wool on its traceable wool scheme.

The Harrison Spinks group has appointed leading sustainability and social responsibility advisor Dr Louise Ellis – who has more than 25 years’ experience of leading organisations to make a difference and strive for environmental and social equity – as non-executive director. Louise’s experience includes both an academic career and working in commercial and large organisational settings.

We are also working with management consultancy Project Rome to support in the development of our sustainability road map.

Simon Spinks, Group Chairman of the Harrison Spinks group, said: “For many years, Harrison Spinks has worked to create a business where the quality and comfort of our products are underpinned by continuous innovation and a sustainable approach.

“We believe that comfort and sustainability go hand in hand and our goal is to be world leaders in both as we create a circular business that leaves the world in a better place for future generations.

“We are pleased to make a joint announcement as we welcome Dr Louise Ellis as a non-executive director and Project Rome who will help us redefine our plans to include an emphasis on our people, our community and sustainable, circular manufacture.

“Becoming a circular business – where we strive to use recycled components and where we grow or manufacture as much of our own sustainable materials as possible on our farms and at our headquarters, and where our products are fully circular at the end of their life – will become the focus for our plans going forward.”

Dr Louise Ellis said: “Harrison Spinks has taken great strides to be an industry leader in the realm of sustainability and has been at the vanguard of the circular economy for more than a decade and I’m delighted to be joining the business as a non‐executive director.

“Working collaboratively, we will develop a roadmap for the future as the business looks to invest and work in new ways to drive forward environmental and social equity; to ensure positive change for the environment, society and the Harrison Spinks community.”

UL Greenguard Gold Certification

At Spinks, we are continuously striving to develop more sustainable and eco-friendly products and processes, so we are delighted that HS2, a joint venture between ourselves and HSM, has earned UL Greenguard Gold Certification for the Micro and Flexecore® spring systems.

Recognized and referenced by over 400 codes, rating systems and procurement policies worldwide, UL’s Greenguard Certification Program requires that products meet rigorous standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor environments, officials said.

Using environmental chamber testing, Micro and Flexecore® were tested for total VOCs, formaldehyde and over 300 VOCs with health-based limits. The Greenguard Gold label validates that these materials are low-emitting and support healthy indoor environment.

The officials commented that the glue-free, high density fabric-encased coil systems present manufacturers with a healthier option, when specifying components for mattress production. The Micro and Flexecore products help to create healthier indoor environments by releasing fewer pollutants into consumers’ homes that can contribute to health issues including asthma and other respiratory issues.

As well as the low VOCs emissions, Flexecore® is also a 100% recyclable product, therefore helping to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill which has becoming a huge issue recently, particularly within the furniture and mattress industries.

Interzum High Product Quality Award 2019

Spinks are proud to announce that we were awarded the Interzum High Product Quality Award 2019 for Flexecore™.

Flexecore™ is a fully sustainable, 100% recyclable spring system that looks set to change the industry as we know it.

Darren Marcangelo, Commercial Director at Spinks, commented: “Flexecore is the most comfortable and supportive pocket spring we believe has ever been made. When compared with a standard pocket spring, it has many more individual points of contact, allowing it to contour with much greater accuracy and precision. Combining the comfort with Flexecore’s sustainability credentials enables the product to speak for itself. No glue is used within the construction of the spring unit, meaning it can be 100% recycled at the end of its life, which is a common problem for all existing pocket springs as the glue contaminates the pocket cloth, making it difficult to recycle.”

Marcangelo continued: “We’re incredibly excited about the potential Flexecore has to impact both the furniture and mattress market. In the UK alone, 7.5million mattresses end up in landfill every year (that’s over 1,000 a week) and we now have a product to help tackle the ongoing environmental issues we’re facing – and we know that fellow manufacturers will be keen to embrace this and show their support.”

Demand For Spinks Springs Leads To New Industry Innovations

Following significant global interest in its award-winning Posturflo and Posturflo 3D, Spinks Springs has invested in its Posturfil microcoil products, which will benefit the mattress and furniture industries.

Using the latest manufacturing and packaging technology – some of which is designed and built by the company itself – Spinks Springs has continued to innovate its spring technology for a number of new products including the new direct-to-consumer roll-packed mattresses. The low-height pocket springs are ideal for use in foam mattresses and can easily compress and flex as the mattress is folded and rolled.

Conventional mattresses also benefit from the additional comfort that can be created by adding layers of miniature pocket springs.

The company’s own state-of-the-art wire drawing facility helps Spinks Springs to further innovate new products, whilst having the ability to supply wire to other spring manufacturers. As part of the investment, Spinks Springs has extended its Posturfil-type machine builds to meet growing demand as well as opening a new Asian plant in 2017 to complement its UK and USA manufacturing facilities.

Posturflo and Posturflo 3D have won an Interzum Award in 2015, followed by a German Design Award in 2016. The company has also been recognised by HM Queen Elizabeth II, with two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation and Sustainable Development.

Drawing Our Own Wire Results in Even Better Springs

Our new machines in Millennium Way means we are now drawing our own wire. We buy in steel rod which is then cleaned and elongated by the drawing lines allowing us to produce different diameters of wire for our springs. Our own equipment will also allow us to produce thinner wire that is not commercially available on the open market and also improve quality and consistency.

Harrison Spinks Launches Spink & Edgar Upholstery

Award-winning Harrison Spinks, one of the UK’s most established and innovative bed makers, has launched Spink & Edgar Upholstery, which will use Harrison Spinks’ leading spring technology in its new sofa range.

Spink & Edgar Upholstery has removed 60% of the foam and other manmade materials used within the seat cushions and throughout the frame and replaced it with pocket sprung core technology, ensuring the sofas are not only more sustainable and comfortable, but will stand the test of time and won’t lose their shape like foam and fibre cushions.

Commercial director Jo Moore, who brings almost 20 years’ experience in the luxury upholstery market, including senior roles at Barker and Stonehouse, Duresta and Collins and Hayes, will head-up the new sofa company.

Jo says: “We wanted to push the boundaries and go where no other furniture manufacturer has gone before. Using our unique spring technology, which has received two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation and Sustainability, we have created a beautiful sofa range with unrivalled comfort that will stand the test of time.

“Combining traditional handcrafting techniques with revolutionary spring technology, we have selected some of the best craftsmen in the industry to build our new sofa range. As well as incorporating the springs for comfort, durability and sustainability, it was important to us that the sofas look beautiful and consumers are proud to have them in their homes.”

Jo will be supported by operations manager, Jason Hibbert, who has more than 20 years’ experience manufacturing high-end upholstery. Jason, who has developed the unique sofa range, adds: “Still using traditional handcraftsmanship, we wanted to reinvent comfort and completely revolutionise the way upholstery is made. Harrison Spinks’ out-of-the-box thinking is what has made it a world leader in innovative spring technology, and we wanted to do the same for the Spink & Edgar sofas.”

Yorkshire-based Spink & Edgar manufactures everything onsite from the springs and FSC wooden frames to growing the natural fillings on its farm. Capitalising on Harrison Spinks’ 175 years’ experience making luxury, market-leading beds using natural products, Spink & Edgar Upholstery will carry across the quality, heritage and commitment to innovation from its parent company.

Simon Spinks, owner and MD of Harrison Spinks, says: “It’s surprising what’s possible when like-minded people get together with nothing but a shared vision. With both Jo and Jason’s combined experience within the upholstery industry, they have developed an amazing product which I’m so proud to be associated with Harrison Spinks.”

Spink & Edgar has a number of retailers already on board to stock the new range from the beginning of December, which will be supported by in-store branding and a fully integrated marketing strategy including advertising, PR and social media.
